FORT EISENHOWER, Ga. (WFXG) - “Hiring our heroes is veterans and soldiers helping soldiers and service members,” stated Ft. Eisenhower Commander Reggie Evans to the summit Thursday.

The event on Fort Eisenhower is meant to help ease that transition into a different profession.

“For those soldiers who are getting out, connect them with employers who have jobs right now that want to hire them and help them think about where they want to move to and what those opportunities look like," said Eric Eversole, President of Hiring Our Heroes.

The summit included exercises for interviews, resume help and advice on how to choose the best careers.

For most soldiers, the military life is all they have known.

“I'm learning how to be a civilian. I've been in the military now for 29 years. So transitioning out of the military is a big deal for me and I want to get it right the first time,” said Sgt. Maj. Gary Oliver, Ft. Eisenhower Signal Proponent.

Veteran, Angela Gaston, Transition Services Manager, says many soldiers are actually looking to stay right here in the CSRA.

And local employers can still get involved with these programs at any time.

“Local employers, we are that touch point when they are trying to connect with that skill set when exiting the military. So reach out to us,” said Gaston.

By law, soldiers leaving service are required to take the next steps in transitioning to a career 12 months before their last day.
