AUGUSTA, Ga. (WFXG) - It is the end of an era for Augusta University as President Brooks Keel just finished up his last week in office.

After nine years as president of Augusta University and 14 years of serving the University System of Georgia, President Keel leaves with a parade of students, faculty, and alumni all wishing him the best.

Dr. Keel leaving behind a legacy as a role model and leader at Augusta University.

“A legacy of care, a legacy of humility and a legacy of excellence,” said Vice Provost Academic Affairs, Zach Kelehear.

Dr. Keel packed up his office, came down the elevator, and was greeted by smiling faces waiting to send him off.

Kelehear says, “He maintained a level personality that was both professional and approachable not an easy balance to strike. And I think people felt like he listened with authenticity, with care, and with the need to do well and listen to what they say and make this place better, he was committed to that.”

Complete with a police escort, even more people were cheering on Dr Keel as he exited the Kelly building one last time.

From putting "Augusta" back in the university's name, to ending his term with a record number of enrollments, dr. Keel has touched many in his nine years leading this school.

“First time I had a meeting with him up here, he was late to the meeting and his assistant told me Mr. Evans I’m sorry but dr. Keel is going to be a little late because he’s in the student center having coffee with students and faculty, I said you tell him I’ll wait all day. The students and the faculty and this place meant everything to him,” said Alumnus, Nick Evans.

Many say the university Dr. Keel leaves behind is one set up for success and continued growth.

“Could there ever be a man who more clarity remained faithful to his values about students and our patients matter through it all he has been faithful and we’re going to miss him terribly,” said Kelehear.

Dr. Keel passed the torch to dr. Russel keen who will begin his new role July 1st.
