JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ga (WFXG) - Construction continues at a dangerous intersection in Jefferson County and more construction and lane closures are expected next week.

Starting Tuesday, July 9, the Georgia Department of Transportation says they will start construction of a concrete median. Once construction starts, GDOT says all vehicles traveling on highway 296 will no longer be able to turn left or go straight through the intersection. Also, vehicles traveling on highway 88 in either direction will not be able to turn left onto 296.

All vehicles will be able to access 296 by making a U-turn a short distance away using extra pavement recently installed by the contractor. This is all apart of a Reduced Conflict U-Turn (RCUT) design they are putting at the intersection.

GDOT says while they are putting in the concrete median, drivers should expect temporary lane closures. Other RCUT construction items include signage and pavement markings. Construction is expected to be complete by mid-July.
