AUGUSTA, Ga. (WFXG) - The future of public transportation in Augusta could soon see a dramatic transformation thanks to a recent grant awarded to Augusta Transit by the U.S. Department of Transportation. The grant, part of the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equality (RAISE) initiative, is set to breathe new life into the Broad Street Transit Center.

Augusta Transit serves countless residents daily. Now, with plans underway to hire a consultant team, the organization aims to re-imagine and redesign the transit center to better meet the needs of all its users.

Deputy Director Oliver Page highlighted the importance of this initiative: "There are so many things that need to be done with this facility. Engaging a consulting team will allow us to conduct a complete environmental and community assessment, to come up with a design."

In addition to structural improvements, such as upgraded facilities and a new design layout, Augusta Transit is committed to enhancing accessibility and inclusivity.

Deputy Director Page emphasized the importance of these changes, including the installation of gender-neutral and ADA-compliant bathrooms.

"Currently, we lack signage in Braille and have binary-gendered restrooms. We want to ensure our facilities are welcoming and accessible to everyone in our community," Page stated.

For regular riders like Gene Andrews, these improvements are eagerly anticipated. "It's not very convenient right now," Andrews remarked. "More community involvement would make our transportation system more efficient and beneficial for everyone."

Augusta Transit officials are actively pursuing additional funding opportunities to further expand their services. "We have applied for grants to acquire electric buses, with news on the outcome expected next week," Deputy Director Page revealed. "These efforts are part of our broader strategy to increase our bus fleet

Augusta Transit's primary objective is to provide high-quality transportation services that enhance mobility and connectivity for all members of the community.
